Did you ever stop and think where the plastic goes on the conventional dishwasher pods that you get from the store? It can’t just disappear, therefore it isn’t good for the environment. Also, a lot of dishwasher detergents use bleach as one of the main ingredients which we then eat off of our dishes. Thankfully, there is a healthier alternative that uses just 3 ingredients that you can make at home and save money!
I decided to experiment with this recipe when I ran out of dishwasher tablets and was hosting a large group. The only time I ever run my dishwasher is when we have company over. It just doesn’t make sense for me to run it other than that because we just don’t make that much dirty dishes yet in one day. I do not like looking at dirty dishes all day before turning it on, so I would rather just quickly wash them after each meal. So, I looked it up and saw that I had all the ingredients on hand. Well, it worked out wonderfully and my dishes were all clean!

Ingredients for Dishwasher Detergent
- 2 cups washing soda
- 2 cups baking soda
- liquid dish soap

Instructions
- In a jar, mix together the 2 cups of washing soda with the 2 cups of baking soda.
- Next time you are wanting to run the dish washer, pour in about a teaspoon of liquid soap into the place where your dishwasher detergent usually goes, then fill it up with the washing soda and baking soda mixture.
- Close and turn the dishwasher on!
Another Healthy Dishwasher Detergent Option
If you have Castile soap on hand, just pouring that in will work as well! Make sure you rinse your dishes before loading the dishwasher with homemade and natural dishwasher detergents because they might have a harder time getting the tougher grease stains off.
