How to Deep Clean Your Oven- Non-toxic Oven Cleaner

September 20, 2025 by TwoPeasinTwoPods Leave a Comment

Let’s face it- as long as you use your oven to bake and cook, it won’t stay spotless for long… Spills that burn onto the oven are not easy to scrub off, but we found a great non-toxic oven cleaner that actually works!

My oven is way passed due for a cleaning. I don’t know about you, but I do not like using any toxic chemicals to clean my house, and especially my kitchen. If you use chemical sprays to wash the inside of your oven, you need to turn it on maximum heat for half an hour to ensure that the toxic fumes do not get onto any food you will ingest. We prefer to just stay safe and opt for clean ingredients, like baking soda, vinegar, essential oils, and water.

Is it easier to just spray some oven cleaner and wipe down any food residue stuck onto your oven? Maybe. However, I would argue that this natural baking soda paste takes just as much elbow grease as the special oven cleaner that you would buy from a store.

If you want to make your oven WAY easier to clean in the future, we would recommend to get yourself these oven liners that catch anything that spills over. Before you place those on the bottom of your oven, let’s clean our ovens ’til they sparkle!

What You’ll Need for the Oven Cleaner

3/4 cup baking soda

1/4 cup water

Optional: essential oils, like lemon, lavender, or peppermint

Steps to a Clean Oven

  1. Remove the oven racks and place into your sink filled with warm water and dish soap. Let the racks soak while you work on scrubbing the interior of your oven.
  2. Combine 3/4 cup of baking soda with 1/4 cup water to create the paste.
  3. Using a toothbrush, spread the baking soda paste all over the interior of your oven. While I was at it, I also did the same to my stovetop.
  4. Let the baking soda sit for about 6 hours.
  5. Pour vinegar on top of the baking soda. There will be a fizzing reaction that will help loosen up all of the dirt.
  6. Using a rag, wipe down everything in the oven until sparkling clean.
  7. Scrub your oven racks down and wipe dry before placing them back into the oven.

How Often Should I Clean the Oven?

It is essential to wipe down the oven and stovetop after each time that you use it. However, it’s a good idea to use this non-toxic method of cleaning your oven about once a month. If your oven offers a self-cleaning option, you should run that about once a year to make sure to take a good care of the appliance.

It feels so good to cook with a super clean oven and stovetop! And it’s nice that I don’t have to worry about any toxic chemicals getting into our food:) If you try this method of cleaning your oven, let us know down in the comments how it worked out for you!
