Effective DIY Toilet Bowl Cleaner

January 24, 2025 by TwoPeasinTwoPods Leave a Comment

This non-toxic, environmentally-friendly DIY toilet bowl cleaner will leave your toilet sparkling with just six ingredients! It might sound like a lot to make a homemade cleaner, but if you’re like me, you’ll already have all of these ingredients. Each of the ingredients serve a specific purpose to disinfect, dissolve limestone, eliminate odors, and break down any stains.

This cleaner is aggressive on the grime, but gentle on the environment.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup liquid Castile soup
  • 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 10 drops tea tree essential oil

Combine all of the ingredients to form a sizzling solution and immediately pour into your toilet bowl. Scrub away with a toilet brush and flush. I also have a pumice stone to scrub the ring of mineral buildup that I usually need to use weekly.

Why Do We Use These Ingredients?

Castile soap is one of my favorite cleaners because it’s organic and made from natural oils. It’s a gentle cleaner that kills harmful bacteria. I love the soapy bubbles the castile soap gives this toilet cleaner.

Hydrogen peroxide is a powerful cleaner, since it has bleaching properties and removes any stubborn stains. It also breaks down odor-causing molecules and disinfects the toilet bowl with its oxidizing capabilities.

Vinegar is another natural cleaning agent that removes hard water deposits thanks to its acidity. Vinegar is even used to unclog showerheads. It also is a great deodorizer and destroys microbes, making it a great addition to the toilet bowl cleaner.

Baking soda is an alkaline cleaner that absorbs odors and loosens dirt due to its abrasive nature. The baking soda reacts with the vinegar in this toilet bowl cleaner, making it fizz and helps to work away any tough grime.

Water helps to create the right consistency to the cleaner;)

While you can use any essential oils that are your favorite scent, tea tree oil is an exceptional oil to use in cleaning due to its antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. Also known as melaleuca, the tea tree essential oil destroys the cell membranes of bacteria, inhibiting any bacterial growth on surfaces, like the toilet bowl!

Deep Cleaning Methods

If your toilet bowl needs a DEEP clean, here are some effective ways.

  1. Sprinkle Borax all over the toilet bowl and let it sit overnight. Flush the toilet in the morning. Borax does a good job at getting rid of any bacteria, mold, mildew, stains, or odors.
  2. Pour a good amount of vinegar into the toilet bowl to allow the lime scale to soak. Let this rest overnight. This will loosen the mineral buildup and disinfect the toilet bowl.

This toilet bowl cleaner has been my go-to lately and I hope it will be in your home as well! Happy cleaning! Let us know down in the comments how it worked out for you!
