It can be tricky to know how to decorate above the kitchen cabinets so follow along as I share tips and tricks to make your kitchen space look cozy!

When we first moved into this mobile home, I was not very fond of the kitchen layout, design, and color. But now that I have added these elements above the kitchen cabinets, it actually made the kitchen look cozy and beautiful.
If you know anything about mobile homes, you know that the kitchen cabinets may not have been made for the kitchen space. On the left side of my kitchen, the cabinets stick out about 2 inches longer than needed. On the contrary, the right side of the kitchen has about a foot space of not-long-enough cabinetry. All of this to say that it bothered my eye that it was not even-Steven. But now with all of my kitchen utensils and decor filling the space of the kitchen, I can hardly even tell that the kitchen is disproportionate! Anyways, these tips and tricks will make you fall in love with your kitchen even if it is not quite your dream kitchen! Try to fall in love with what you got!

Ideas for Decor Above the Kitchen Cabinets
- Plants
- Cake Stands
- Cookbooks
- Pretty Dishes
- Vases
- Baskets

Before you go out and buy a bunch of decor that can be pricey, look in the back of your cabinets or pantry for items that you don’t use on a daily basis but can be used as decor. For instance, maybe you have a glass pitcher that you pull out when all the family comes for Thanksgiving or Christmas. Or maybe you have an old basket that isn’t in use anymore. Collect your own inventory and stage it above the cabinets. See how it looks and then when you go shopping keep your eye out for items that would look pretty. If you have a tight budget, thrifting can be a great option! One man’s trash, another man’s treasure!
I have a funny story on thrift shopping. My sister and I did not grow up thrifting but my husbands family did. So getting back from a trip of thrifting with my mother-in-law, I felt inspired to take my sister too! We went to a local Goodwill and my sister was just stacking her cart full of house decor and all sorts of cute frames and gadgets. When we got to the cashier register, my sister’s eyes popped out of her head when she saw how much she was charged. We were laughing so hard as she was taking stuff out that she didn’t really need. The point of this story is that even at a thrift store you could potentially waste money!

How to Decorate Above the Cabinets
- First, place your greenery out (faux or living). Tip: plants usually look well in corners, especially if they hang down. If using living plants, make sure they will do well in the lighting of your kitchen. Also, don’t forget to water them! 😉 But if you want to play it safe, just buy artificial plants.
- Then, pair “like with like”. For example, if you have a bunch of vases, layer them out all together. I have two cute vases my husband found on the side of the road that I staged together to make an elegant look. I also paired my two wooden cake stands together that I got from my bridal shower and never returned because they are different sizes!
- Finally, assess how it turned out! Does it look too cluttered or is the vase too small for your space? Adjust to your taste!
Side Notes
Even if you do not have a green thumb, there are many options of fake plants that actually look real! Personally, I do not have a green thumb thus I only got one plant in my kitchen. But I do plan on investing in some more and learning to keep them alive! Plants are wonderful for cleaning the air and have so many health benefits. My challenge to you is to do the same!
Also, I have a wooden dish rack that was not in use that I propped a beautiful dish in. My first plan was to put all my cookbooks in the wooden dish rack, but then I realized I would never reach for them if I left them above the cabinets. I might still throw a few cookbooks up there and see how they look.
If you have space on top of your fridge like I do, the same tips and tricks work here as for on top of kitchen cabinets. On top of the fridge I placed my cute mint Kitchen Aid and my heart-shaped picnic basket. It’s a nice place for storage and is aesthetically pleasing.
