Homemade Pizza Sauce from Fresh Tomatoes

November 14, 2024 by TwoPeasinTwoPods 1 Comment

Although canned store-bought pizza sauce is great for last-minute pizza nights, you will see that homemade pizza sauce from fresh tomatoes tastes way better!

The marriage of tomatoes with garlic and fresh herbs like basil is incredibly delightful on a pizza!

Why Make Your Own Pizza Sauce?

I think many of us know that homemade anything is much tastier and healthier than store-bought. Pre-packaged and canned items from the store often have additives and preservatives that are not very healthy. In addition, most things that we buy from the store can be easily made at home, like sauces and condiments. Be sure to check out our condiment recipes here:

  • Homemade Mayonaise
  • Homemade Ranch Dressing

Ingredients

  • tomatoes
  • minced garlic
  • olive oil
  • salt
  • sugar
  • red chilli flakes
  • dried oregano
  • basil
  • black pepper

Fresh or Dried Herbs?

You could use whatever you have on hand either dried or fresh. I prefer fresh because it brings out the flavor more but dried will work just as well. You could even use granulated garlic instead of freshly minced garlic for the same great taste.

Instructions

  1. Rinse, cut, and puree tomatoes in a blender.

2. Heat up oil in a wok or large pan. Add garlic until fragrant. Then add the chilli flakes.

3. Add the tomato puree and turn on low. Simmer for 20 minutes until it thickens.

4. Then add all the herbs and seasonings.

5. Mix the herbs in and let it simmer for another 5 minutes. It will thicken some more.

6. Let it cool, then either use it on a pizza right aways or store in the fridge until needed. You could also can this pizza sauce for longer preservation or freeze by pouring into freezer ziploc bags.

Tools that I would highly recommend in your kitchen are the Ninja blender and the Hex Clad wok. They are both used so much in my kitchen and work very well. These would make great Christmas gifts to your mom, sister, or friend!

Homemade Pizza Sauce Using Fresh Tomatoes

Although canned store-bought pizza sauce is great for last-minute pizza nights, you will see that homemade pizza sauce from fresh tomatoes tastes way better! The marriage of tomatoes with garlic and fresh herbs like basil is incredibly delightful on a pizza!

  • blender
  • wok or large pan
  • 9 cups cubed tomatoes
  • 4 minced garlic cloves
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 6 basil leaves
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp crushed red pepper
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  1. Wash, cube, and puree tomatoes in a blender.

  2. Add olive oil into a wok or large pan and turn on high.

  3. Add minced garlic to the heated oil for about a minute, or until fragrant. Then add the crushed red peppers.

  4. Next, add the tomato puree to the mixture and let it simmer for 20 minutes on low.

  5. Then, add the rest of the seasonings: salt, pepper, sugar, chopped basil, and dried oregano.

  6. Let it simmer for another 5 minutes until it thickens a little.

  7. All done! You can either use some of it right aways on a pizza or pour into jars for future use.

  • This recipe is a large proportion, so canning the pizza sauce or just freezing it in ziplock bags is a great option for future use!
  • The pizza sauce will store well in the fridge for a couple of weeks.
