My mom wanted me to become a seamstress when I was younger. She told me it was a lost art but will always be a necessary trade. When putting together our wedding registry, I decided to put a Singer sewing machine in case someone would buy it for us. I thought every homemaker should at least have one, right? One of our lovely guests did indeed buy us the sewing machine so I decided to try learning how to sew some basics! Although sewing can be very frustrating if you do not know how to use your sewing machine, it is fun to see the end result and know your own hands made it! All of that to say, I am by no means a sewing machine expert or even a sewer, but this DIY curtain is so easy I have confidence anyone can do it.
When my husband and I were remodeling our RV on a budget, I decided to sew the curtains myself using a similar method. You could check out our post on the RV renovation here. I went to Joanns, bought linen white fabric to cover all the windows but had enough leftover for my kitchen window in our home now. Although we live in the country, any windows without curtains make me feel like I don’t have privacy. I think curtains also make a space look more homey.
Do you have a window that needs a curtain? Try making it yourself following the easy DIY curtain instructions down below. Glad you are here, follow along!

Materials Necessary for DIY Curtains
- sewing machine (not an affiliate link, just if you’re interested)
- thread
- material of your choice, enough to cover your window and more (just in case)
- measuring tape
- scissors
- pins
- iron

Instructions for Easy DIY Curtain
- Using a measuring tape, measure the window you want to hang a curtain on and where the curtain rod is in relation to the window. See what length and width is necessary to cover the window. Also consider how long you want the flaps to hang from the top. I had them about an inch and a half long.
- Making sure your material is straight and ready for cutting, add about an inch to the measurements you got and cut the material accordingly. Cut the material in half as well for the two sides of the window.
- Then, iron down a half of an inch from all the edges to get a crisp line.
- Now using the sewing machine, sew all of the edges down.
- Next, cut the flaps into pieces the width and length you would like. I cut mine 3 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide. Now again, leave room for error. I made 8 flaps, 4 on each side.
- Iron the edges again to get neat, crisp lines.
- Then sew the edges on the flaps.
- Now, put your material down on a flat surface and place the flaps on the top. Measure them to all be dispersed evenly.
- Pin them to the main material, bending the flaps on both sides and making sure all of the flaps are even.
- Using the sewing machine, sew the flaps onto the main material.
- Using scissors, trim any extra thread that is loose on your curtain.
- Hang your work of art onto the curtain rod and see if you like it.
- Adjust what doesn’t suit your eye.
- That’s it!! This project has a lot of room for error so even if you wing it and eye ball it, it will turn out beautiful!

Final Result of Curtain
This easy DIY curtain project took me about an hour and a half to make! It really is so simple and the end result looks beautiful. I had my husband hang up the curtain rod before I started sewing so that I know exactly what length to sew my curtains.
