1. Open Up Windows
In order for your home to smell fresh, you got to make sure you are getting the fresh air from the great outdoors into your home. Trapped air will always smell bad! I live in a very hot climate so in the summer time it is tricky to find a time window to open up the windows. 😉 At 7am it is already in the 80’s outside and in the evening it doesn’t always cool off. I still will turn the AC thermometer up and open up the windows for just 5 minutes to get any air flow going even if it is warm air.

2. Have Air-Purifying Plants
Plants absorb harmful toxins from the air and increase the oxygen levels. Although some research has found that plants don’t purify the air significantly, it does not hurt to have plants since they act as decor and seem to only be benefitting the air quality in your home, even if it’s a small percent. Check out our blog post here on easy plants to have in the home that also purifies the air!

3. Clean Your Rugs, Carpeting, and Flooring
If you have carpet, make sure it is cleaned regularly or if it is old, replace it! Carpet traps allergens such as dust mites, pet yuck, and even mold spores. Breathing this in on a regular can take a toll on your health, so make sure you are on top of this one!
A brilliant way to clean your carpet and rugs is to sprinkle baking soda and let it sit for 30 minutes. Then, just vacuum it up! Baking soda has properties that soaks up bad odor. If you have bad stains that you need to take out, spray vinegar onto the area and scrub it out with a brush.

4. Diffuse Essential Oils or Burn a Non-Toxic Candle
Essential oils, especially lemon, lavender, and peppermint have antimicrobial properties that help clean the air. Eucalyptus essential oil can help clear your respiratory system, which also is essential for smelling and breathing in good air. Running the diffuser helps clean the air and make your home smell good.
I love candles! I think they make a space look more cozy, romantic, and they just smell so good! But, I don’t just love any candle. I love candles that do not contain harmful ingredients. Some non-toxic options are soy and beeswax candles. I recommend finding a natural local candle company to support! Beeswax or soy candles not only smell good, but they actually purify the air as well!

5. Air Purifier
Air Purifiers clean the air by gathering pollutants and anything foreign from the air and blowing the clean air back out into the air. Because the air inside your home is about 100 times more polluted than outdoor air, it’s smart to invest into an air purifier that could help purify your homes indoor air. Ever since COVID, schools and other government buildings have installed air purifiers into the AC system to purify the air while blowing cold air. Some options for air purifiers are AirDoctor and Taotronics. These are the two I am most familiar with. Research which air purifier works best for your home depending on the size, if you got pet, and what kind of filter you prefer. There’s a lot to choose from!
