What is Focaccia?

Focaccia is an Italian flatbread that was made on a hearth of a fire starting hundreds of years ago. This bread is a Mediterranean staple featuring a moist but airy bread. Although it is a flatbread, it is still thick enough to be soft. Olive oil is a staple in the Mediterranean cuisine, so make sure to use an olive oil of your choice! Although originally focaccia is made on yeast, we will use sourdough instead for the health benefits. Don’t worry, it tastes just as great or even better!

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water
  • 1/2 cup active sourdough starter
  • 3 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp salt

Toppings

  • red, white, or yellow onions sliced
  • olives
  • greens such as parsley, cilantro, dill, and chives
  • tomatoes
  • bell peppers
  • garlic cloves
  • herbs of choice

Really, the options are endless for what you can use for decor as the toppings. There are so many beautiful designs on Pinterest to get inspired by!

This sourdough focaccia looks amazing! Have you tried adding rosemary and sea salt for extra flavor?
