DIY Faux Ceramic Vase- How to Make a Vase Look Like Aged Pottery

July 22, 2024 by TwoPeasinTwoPods 3 Comments

I’m about to show you a simple tutorial for a DIY Faux Ceramic Vase, which uses a baking soda and paint mixture, that can transform any vase you have on hand into a beautiful, expensive-looking antique ceramic piece.

My sweet mother-in-law offered me these two vases before she was planning to get rid of them. Even though the design on them wouldn’t really match the style I’m going for in my home, I really liked the shapes of them. That’s why I tried revamping them into something charming that I would be proud to display on my mantle.

Something that has been on my radar when I visit thrift stores is ceramic pottery and crockery. Specifically, I’m looking if the vase is antique and withstood the test of time. Usually these kind of pieces are pretty pricey at an antique store. You can find some cute options in other stores, like this one from Pottery Barn, but as a rule of thumb they are expensive and not actually antique anyway. That’s what inspired me to try out this DIY faux ceramic vase project and I absolutely loved the end result!

How to Make This DIY Faux Ceramic Vase

Step 1: First and foremost, make sure to wipe down your vases and wash them so that they’re ready for painting.

Grey paint in a paper bowl with a brush.

Step 2: Next, I painted the vases with the plain leftover grey paint that I found in my garage. This just gave a me a nice base color to then add texture to.

Step 3: Mix in a tablespoon of baking soda into a cup of paint to start with. Then you can add more, depending on the texture you’re looking for. I ended up adding more to create a more chunky mixture. Once the first layer dries a bit(it took like 10 minutes for me) start applying this mixture evenly onto your vase.

Step 4: This next step is optional, but I really thought it made my vase look more ceramic. If you want a more clean look, this step probably won’t suit you. Can you believe that I smeared COFFEE grinds onto the vase?! I experimented only with one of the vases and as the vases stand in my home I will make my final decision on what I like better. Let me know down in the comments what your opinion is:)

Last thoughts for the DIY Faux Ceramic Vase

This DIY faux ceramic vase project was so much fun! If you have some older kiddos, I’m sure they would love doing this with you. I was actually taken back at how these two vases turned out! And I think I will eventually apply some more coffee grounds onto the second vase.

Two vases filled with eucalyptus.

Since I didn’t have any faux greenery on hand(by golly are they expensive at the store!), my kind husband snipped some branches off of our eucalyptus tree at our church. Fresh eucalyptus looks just as pretty as dried sprigs, so this is what I placed inside of my vases.

If you have any spare vases that you would like to repurpose, I highly encourage you to try out this DIY faux ceramic vase project! Thank you so much for visiting Two Peas in Two Pods!!! Hope you stick around and check out all of our other posts on cozy decorating!

I always see inexpensive glass vases at thrift stores. I like how you upcycled them!
