Looking for a little craft to put together for some fall decor? This project is quick, affordable, and cute! It took me less than 20 minutes to pull together and I used things I already had on hand.

Two Methods to Make the Pumpkins

I will be showing you two different methods of making these cute fabric pumpkins. Method 1 will show you how to wrap a sock in fabric and Method 2 will show you how to sew a sock into a pumpkin.

Method 1: Fabric Over Sock

Materials Needed for Method 1 of Fabric Pumpkins

  • sock
  • fabric enough to cover sock (I used this fabric from Joanns, unaffiliated)
  • wooden stick for a stem
  • glue

Steps for Fabric Pumpkins

  1. Cut a sock into two pieces, like shown below. I like to cut it exactly in half (if you have a longer sock). If you have a shorter sock, skip this step and don’t cut. You’ll need the length.

2. Roll the sock up. Make it a nice, circular shape because this will be what the shape of your pumpkin will take. This is the base of your fabric pumpkin, so make sure it’s the shape you want it to take.

3. Cover the sock with the material. Fold the material over the sock and make ridges with the fabric by over-layering it as shown below.

4. Glue fabric together and the stick in the center. I just used Elmers glue, but if you have a hot glue gun handy, I would recommend using that instead.

Fabric Pumpkin (Method 1)

These cute fabric pumpkins take very little time and use materials you already have on hand! Perfect way to decorate for the fall!

  • pair of scissors
  • 1 sock
  • fabric of choice
  • 1 small stick
  • glue (Elmers or hot glue gun)
  1. Cut the sock into two pieces.

  2. Roll the sock up into a circular shape.

  3. Place in the middle of your piece of fabric and cover the sock with the material. Make sure you add the "ridges" of the pumpkin by folding the fabric over itself to create them.

  4. Glue the fabric into place over the sock and then glue the stick in the center of the pumpkin.

  5. Repeat instructions for a second pumpkin using the second half of the sock.

Method 2: Stuffed Sock

Materials Needed for Method 2 Fabric Pumpkins

  • sock cut in half
  • needle and thread
  • thread for outside of pumpkin to make the ridges
  • scissors
  • stick for stem

Steps for Stuffed Sock Method

  1. Cut a sock in half and stuff it with the other half evenly. If you have special stuffing, you could use that as well.

2. Sew the edges with a needle and thread all the way around and tighten. Go around with the needle around the hole of the sock and then pull together to tighten, like the photo shows. I am no sewer, so don’t be scared of this step if you don’t have experience with the needle and thread.

3. Place the stick in the center and use it as an anchor to put the ridges for the pumpkin using another thread.

Fabric Pumpkin (Method 2)

This method doesn't require any fabric, just a sock! So pull out any old sock you got or if you got a single sock, this is the perfect project to put it in use! It will turn into a beautiful pumpkin for your fall decor!

  • pair of scissors
  • needle & thread
  • 1 sock
  • thread for ridges on pumpkin
  • 1 stick
  1. Cut the sock in half.

  2. Roll up one half of the sock and stuff it into the center of the other sock.

  3. Next, sew the edges of the sock together to make it into a ball.

  4. Place the stick into the center of the pumpkin and using your choice of thread, make the ridges of the pumpkin using the stick as an anchor.

  5. All done! Go find a place to decorate your sock pumpkin!

Can I Use Colorful Fabric?

Yes, yes, yes!!! Depending on what look you are going for, feel free to use fall patterns to make this fabric pumpkin! You could use socks with leaves or that are orange to spice it up! If you have an old flannel, feel free to cut it to the size needed and that will make a beautiful pattern for pumpkins as well!

Size Variety

Do you want to make a variety of pumpkins like small, big, tall, or fat pumpkins? Just use more or less filling to make the pumpkin into the desired shape! Use your creativity! Stuff 2 socks into the center to make it bigger or taller. Play it by ear, use your discretion!
