Even though lighting a candle makes your home oh-so-inviting any time of the year, the dance of a flame is even more appreciated in the cooler months. Having a candle on in November hits different than in July, hands down! We love making our own beeswax and tallow candles(tutorials coming soon). However, if you want an oil candle made in just a few minutes without any mess, this is the perfect option!

Follow along as I make the world’s easiest homemade candle(aka oil lamp). All it takes is a few supplies and an oil of your choice- olive, avocado, or canola. Avoid using oils with a low smoke point!

What You’ll Need
- Mini pumpkin or mason jar
- wick(floating or regular)
- Some kind of oil(avocado or olive oil are great options)
- essential oils
Since it’s fall time and we had a little pumpkin that fell off the vine before it was ripe, I decided to make the candle into a pumpkin. If you don’t want to use a pumpkin, you can totally just make this oil candle with a mason jar or these cute golden candle holders that I also have on hand. Really, anything that can withstand some heat is good to go!

Since oil floats on water, you could first add water to the container you’re using in order to save on the amount of oil. A little goes a long way when it comes to oil, so you don’t need the mason jar full of oil. First pour water and then your choice of oil on top. I decided to just pour oil since the pumpkin was so tiny. Additionally, I used avocado oil because it doesn’t have much of a smell and I wanted to add essential oils in to have a delicious aroma in my house.
Fall-y Essential Oils:
- Bergamont
- Juniper
- Cypress
- Cinnamon bark
- Ginger
- Cardamom
- Clove bud
- Orange
Some people like to add some cute seasonal decorations in the water portion to spruce up this oil candle. For fall time, you can add some colorful leaves that turned yellow, orange, and red. In the winter time, a few slices of orange and cranberries would add to the festivity. For spring time, some blooms would brighten up the look . Come summer time, some wildflowers would look sweet. Since I’m using a pumpkin for this candle, I opted out from adding anything into the water portion, since you won’t be able to see anything through the pumpkin anyway. 😉
This super easy oil candle tutorial is brought to you by Irene. I hope you feel inspired to make your own oil lamp and add it to your fall bucket list! Be careful to keep this oil candle away from children and pets when lit for obvious reasons! We love watching the flicker of this candle in our home this time of year, especially in our adorable, home-grown mini pumpkin.
