Different circumstances in life can throw us into a season of rest, may it be postpartum or other life changes. Life as a homemaker will have to continue and although other people can step in and help, it may be a smart idea to think ahead and prepare in various ways to help out when you will need rest.
I am 37 weeks pregnant in the moment and am preparing for the arrival of my second baby. It might come natural for me to think of this right now because of the nesting hormone I am experiencing as I prepare for the big change coming up! So follow along for some practical tips on getting ready for a season of rest as a homemaker.

1. Declutter & Get the Home Clean
Getting your home decluttered and minimal will help you keep your sanity as you transition to having a baby in those first few weeks. Bring your home to a spot where it can be easily cleaned and put back into shape in less than 15 minutes.
If this is overwhelming to you, focus on regularly used spaces like your bedroom and bathroom. Then, declutter all the surfaces so that they are minimal and don’t stress you out upon looking. Make the space look fresh and cozy so that you enjoy being in that room.

Rearrange Furniture to Better Serve You
If needed, rearrange spaces to make more sense in your season of rest. For example, in our room, I rearranged it to better fit the baby dresser and little crib for those first few weeks when the baby will be with us.

2. Prepare Food Ahead
I am not a huge fan of freezing meals. To be honest, I don’t think frozen meals are as tasty as freshly made. It may be a mind game, but I think I taste the difference! So, if it’s not preparing a bunch of freezer meals, how do I prepare for a season of rest when I will not be able to cook for the family the first few weeks?
Write Out a List of Easy Meals
Get a notebook together of easy recipes that can be pulled together in 15-20 minutes. Some ideas are dishes with rice, pasta, pizza (with pre-made crusts), and potato.
You can even get this beautiful recipe notebook that will make it extra fun!

Get the Pantry & Fridge Stocked
In order to be able to have easy meals on hand, you will have to make sure your pantry and fridge are stocked with imperishable items such as rice and other grains, vegetables that don’t go bad quickly like potatoes, and canned goods. I will make things like sauerkraut that will last for months in the fridge and be a great quick option to pair with any meal.
What I DO Stock My Freezer With
Earlier I mentioned that I do not like freezing meals. That is true for the most part, but I do make sure I am stocked on things like:
- Orange Chicken from Trader Joes
- Pelemeni (a Russian dish that freezes really well)
- broth (my sweet sister-in-law got me stocked)
- bread, bagels, English muffins (all pre-cut to quickly throw into a toaster)
- homemade pizza crusts that are ready to unthaw and bake
- vegetables like broccoli
- fruit and berries (for quick smoothies or to add to yogurt or other breakfast foods)
