Simple and Scrumptious Affogato Recipe

July 5, 2024 by TwoPeasinTwoPods 1 Comment

Looking for a mouthwatering way to enjoy some coffee on a hot summer day? This simple and scrumptious affogato recipe is a delightful way to do just that! Affogato could be slapped together in just a few minutes and gives you the ultimate pick-me-up.

Originating in Italy, this dessert combines espresso and gelato to create the most decadent drink. My favorite part of this simple and scrumptious affogato recipe is how the ice cream melts in the hot espresso. The Italian word affogato means “drowned” because the ice cream literally drowns in the coffee. Doesn’t that just sound lovely?! You can start by eating it with a spoon and then finish it off by drinking whatever remains.

Ingredients for the Affogato Recipe

  • 1-2 scoops of vanilla ice cream or gelato
  • a shot of espresso (1-2 oz)
  • toppings of your choice

Toppings

The sky is the limit when it comes to what you can add to top off the affogato. While the affogato is typically served without toppings, you may want to consider some of these add-ons to make your drink that much better! I chose to shave some dark chocolate on top of my afternoon drink, but here are some other choices that would also be superb.

A grater, chocolate bar, and affogato in a glass cup.
  • crushed Italian pizzelle cookies
  • dusted cocoa powder
  • grated chocolate(from white to dark-whichever is your favorite)
  • chopped nuts(walnuts, pecans, pistachio, hazelnuts, etc.)
  • warmed chocolate or caramel sauce
  • crumbled biscotti

How to prepare affogato:

Step 1: Primarily, scoop out some ice cream into your selected dish. This dessert looks stunning in a pretty glass or an ice cream dish. As much as I would love to make my own ice cream, we just bought some Tillamook ice cream for this simple and scrumptious affogato recipe. If you’d like to stick to the Italian theme, you can also use gelato.

The first step of the process is to scoop ice cream into a dish.

Step 2: Next, make your shot of espresso. Depending on how strong you want your drink, you can add one or two shots of espresso. Don’t have an espresso machine? Don’t fret! A few ounces of strong coffee will do the trick.

This photo shows the breville espresso machine used to make the simple and scrumptious affogato.

Step 3: Pour the hot espresso onto the ice cream and add any toppings that you would like. Enjoy this dessert right away!

Trust me, you don’t want to wait too long or else you’ll be eating an ice cream and coffee soup. Personally, I absolutely love how affogato combines the cold and hot temperatures that balance each other so well!
