How to Transform Your Closet with an IKEA Closet System

May 25, 2026 by TwoPeasinTwoPods Leave a Comment

If you’re wondering why your closet is constantly a mess, it’s probably because it’s not set up for success. An IKEA closet system will do the trick! Before we redid our closet, we just had two poles hanging in our closet, so it was hard for me to reach the top shelf for any casual clothes. The extra step of stepping onto a chair to reach the top to put away clothes would make me procrastinate that task. Therefore, the floor of our closet was almost always covered with stacks of clothing.

The before photo of our messy closet.

I took this photo after taking everything off the floor already, but you can see how there was a lot of dead space where we couldn’t put clothes in an organized fashion. The top shelf was too high for my short self. The piles of clothes on top were driving me crazy and the two poles were already caving in.

If you’re looking for a closet system, your search is over! I can’t even tell you what a difference the IKEA closet system(that we bought for roughly $200) made. Our closet went from something resembling a tornado to a beautifully organized one. We’ve had this new closet system for a month now and it still is in tip-top shape. That says a lot! I am NOT a naturally organized person, and it’s actually kinda hard for me to keep closets, cabinets, and any closed spaces looking neat.

Steps to Transform Your Closet

  1. Take out all of the clothes. While I was at it, I also set aside any articles of clothing that didn’t fit well or that I didn’t like anymore to donate.
  2. Remove the old closet system. For us, it was the two poles and the top shelf. We also had to touch up some paint during this step.
  3. Follow the directions to set up the closet system. The IKEA closet system directions were honestly pretty confusing, but it was simple enough to do that we figured it out by ourself.
  4. Hang all the dressy clothes and fold up the casual and place them where it makes most sense to you.
We took out the two poles and shelf.

This is how our closet looked like after taking out the old closet system, so we had to do some work before we were able to set up the new one.

Before I would be constantly decluttering, thinking that I had too much clothes. Now that we have the wardrobe combination, there is enough shelving to add even more clothes if I want to. Now that we have shelves in the middle of our closet, there is a home for all of our t-shirts, jeans, and tanks. On the sides, we have the poles where we can hang our dressy clothes, suits, and slacks. I even look forward to folding and putting away laundry now!

Pros of the IKEA Closet System

  • Great quality
  • budget-friendly
  • Easy to install and set up
  • fits into our small closet perfectly(adjustable)
  • there are different color options
The final result with our clothing all in!

My husband and I got quite a dopamine hit getting this project done! If you want to transform your closet, we highly recommend spending a little bit of money to make dressing up easier each day. The IKEA closet system solved our problem and taught me how much easier it is to keep a neat closet when there is organizational structures.
