Antique Bicycle Plant Stand

September 3, 2025 by TwoPeasinTwoPods Leave a Comment

Looking for some inspiration on how to organize plants on your front porch? Maybe try to transform a bike into a plant stand! I first got the idea to transform a bicycle into a plant stand from my sister’s neighbor. Anytime we drove by the cute yellow bike with succulents pouring over a basket, I thought what a neat idea it was. So, when a friend from church told me he was throwing away his bike from when he was a newspaper boy years ago, I knew I had to make a DIY project from it!

How to Transform a Bike into a Plant Stand

  1. Choose a Bike: find a bike that is no longer used, old, or an antique if you’re lucky! I love that mine has a cool story to tell so look around. (think grandpas old rusty bike)
  2. Choose the Color of Paint: I’m a copy-cat and painted my bike the same color as the neighbors.
  3. Buy the Spray Paint: I suggest using spray paint because it is much easier than using a paint brush. But feel free to paint your bike whichever way you want!
  4. Get the Bike Ready: Take the tires off or anything that you would not like to keep.
  5. Sand the Bicycle: inspect the bicycle and see if it needs sanding. It will need to be sanded if the paint is chipped or it is rusty. (If using a newer bike you may not need to sand)
  6. Clean the Bike: using a damp cloth, wipe down the bicycle from any dirt, cobwebs, sanding materials, etc.
  7. Spray Paint: Lay the bike down on some cardboard boxes or a painting drop cloth. Then, spray paint the bike on one side. Once it dries, flip over and do it on the other side.
  8. Display the Bike: Depending on what kind of bike you are working with, you may want to buy a hanging basket. If you are not a live plant person, displaying the bike with fake plants like these would also be a good option! I had this beautiful metal watering can that I also displayed on the handlebar. Just get creative and have fun with it! Because I liked the way it looked with succulents, that what I chose to decorate my bike with, but really any plants will make it beautiful!
